There already have been serious consequences, and judging by what we've seen so far, it's probably going to get worse. In fact, I can't even really see how it can get better.

However, a lot of our "prosperity" has been caused by, essentially, "faking" it. Even if in the long run (25, 50, 100 years?) we're totally fucked, there's no reason we can't have faked prosperity again for a period, maybe long enough to engineer a softer landing...
