I'd postulate that there are an equal number of brilliant men now as then. If there were 100 then, there are 1000 now. And these 1000 brilliant men have effected to rob us blind.

What changed is evil, fraud, duplicity and narcissism. What changed is profound love of self. What changed is the re-emergence of the aristrocracy. What changed is moral bankrupcy. What changed is entitlement. What changed is an addiction to money and power.

What stayed the same is brilliance.
