In the depth of economic meltdown (near the bottom). Yeltsin was one of the Communist leaders during Soviet times. I personally voted for him to advance for power in 89 since he came from my region. I forgot what it was. During Gorbachev times things were changing, and several candidates appeared for ordinary folks like me to vote for. Before we never even voted - you went to "elections", there was 1 candidate. <g> He always took it personally and talked to people, shared their pain. A good man.
