It WAS a different time and place. Angela Davis's (Communist philosophy professor at Stanford? UCLA?) nephew took a Marin County Judge Hostage at the "Big Pink" courthouse and the judges head got blown off in the ensuing shootout. That's when metal detectors went up at California Courthouses.

The Black Panthers were actively arming themselves all over Oakland.

The Symbionese Liberation Army took Patricia Hearst (daughter of the scion of Hearst Newspapers) hostage and then converted her into a militant revolutionary that held up banks in the Bay Area.

The "San Quentin Six" attempted a bust out using a gun smuggled into the prison by (allegedly) a rich radical defense attorney---Stephen Bingham--who then disappeared. (He was found in Canada some 15 years later and copped a plea.)

Criminal Defense attorneys saw/suspected plants, bugs, wires, drug drops, and gun drops everywhere. When they went into San Quentin to interview their clients they wouldn't talk to them, but passed notes back & forth and then tore up the notes and carried them out with them on leaving.

Cops were "Pigs". Returning Vietnam Black Veterans were said to be arming the Panthers with automatic weapons. Slogans indicative of class strife were rife ("Burn, Baby, Burn "Power to the People")

Radical Black Literature made best seller lists (Soul on ice, The Fire Next Time--these may have been from the 60's))

But that was then. Maybe the Cops and criminal defense attorneys hang out together now.
