From the tone of that question, it looks as if you are saying unions simply won't do this sort of thing. But, of course, they did in that instance. And they did in GM's more recent case.

My wife is a member of the union at CUNY and they've done this sort of thing, both when they should have and when they should not have.

Depends, like everything else. On the union and the crisis.
