I've always had a lot of doubts about whether Odysseus really wanted to get home all that much. In fact, a later tradition, also told in a poem called "The Odyssey" (by Nikos Kazantzakis this time, instead of Homer. Nikos also wrote "Zorba The Greek" and "The Last Temptation of Christ") has Odysseus growing bored on his return from Ithaca (many Cornell students can sympathize). He takes off on another journey and convinces Helen to go along with them. Both had the wanderlust and other kinds of lust. Maybe they were tired of Penelope and Menelaus telling them they drank too much. <G>
