There is not much reason to melt it into bars unless you want it to be more compact. A refiner would still pay you the same for it either way. Now if you wanted to refine it yourself and make it into 99.99% shot gold, you could increase it from being worth 95% of spot to spot.

In theory you could do that with about $1000 worth of equipment or much less depending on your skills and ability to access hard to get chemicals. So if you refined 20k in scrap gold you would break even (not your counting time) and assuming that you found a market for it. In other words, it is not worth doing anything with it unless you go fairly BIG or just want to have some fun.
