By "conventional wisdom" I gather you mean what the lay people say about evolution. In scientific circles it has been well known for a long time that most variation comes from sexual reproduction in which known sucessfull genes are combined with other known sucessfull genes and the best match is tried in the next generation. Yes, there are mutations, and yes they are the only source of completely novel genes, but the bulk of evolutionary changes comes from novel combinations of existing genes, and not completely new amino acid sequences.
