Just a nitpik:

March 2000 4,947 public companies were trading.

As of Jan 31 2009 the number of public companies trading has fallen to 3,139. 57% of 2000 companies taken out and shot


36% of companies have disappeared since your March 2000 figure

(4947-3139=1808/4947=36.5%)

It would take a new rise of 57% from here to return to 4947.

But your point is very clear. The destruction has been substantial!
