the other two times it was tried (Japan in the 1990s and America in the 1930s) the economy basically rolled along in the doldrums for the rest of the decade.

That is the picture of the '30s that is in vogue now and since the early 1980s, when supply siders became trendy. But Krugman has charts and history that says otherwise, here:
