I changed my mind about the death penalty- partly because of discussions on SI. I used to be for it- kind of reflexively, because my dad was shot in a mass murder (though he was wounded and not killed), and I wanted the guy dead. But after a lot of discussions on SI I decided I don't want the people who run the DMV and the IRS taking lives (for the record, I don't want any private company in that business either). Why? Because bureaucracies make mistakes. If they make a mistake with your car, or your money, they can make you whole- if they screw up about your life, they really can't.
