A bubble bursting isn't an unusual factor. Its not something you see day to day or even year to year, but it happens fairly regularly over the longer term.

The Fed is pushing on that string to no effect.

You don't have to push any string. Just do nothing and the economy will recover. The argument for doing something is that you hope to make it recover faster, not that it will not recover without some form of pushing or intervention. And even the "recover faster" idea is far from solidly established.
