All responses to this challenge appear to favor the X2 approach. Now for the second question:

Will there ever be a V.PCM standard for 56Kbps modem modulation similar to V.34? Will the litigation over patent claims or the smell of blood by COMS with proprietary X2 technology or the fear of software host based V.PCM coding prevent this standard from becoming a reality?
