Bingo, that's the 800-pound gorilla sitting next to all of us on the sofa that no one wants to acknowledge.

Although I would have to spend some time looking this up, you will just have to take my word for it for now that Madison wrote either a letter or an essay (probably both) in which he said that the country would need a different government sometime in the middle of the 20th century due to increasing demographic and geographic size and complexity. He even went through various mathematics exercises when he talked about population.

Of course, our government has evolved since his day, something he would have approved of. I wish we could bring him back to argue with the "original intent" people.
