Salmonella -- Wash Your Hands and Watch Your Water
JMARs Laser-Based System Has Novel Detection Approach
Thursday February 5, 2009, 11:38 am EST

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--JMAR Technologies, Inc., maker of the award-winning BioSentry® water contamination warning system, uses novel laser-based “bio-optical signatures” to detect water borne contaminants like Salmonella. The recent Salmonella outbreak in peanut butter has reminded us of the importance of food processing cleanliness, clean water, and continuous monitoring for harmful contaminants.

According to Frost & Sullivan, “The BioSentry® is a completely different waterborne biological detection solution. The system utilizes laser-produced, multi-angle light scattering (MALS) to detect the signatures of microorganisms and determine, within seconds, if a water supply is contaminated.” Notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Lindsay Voss, “As a result of the system’s continuous monitoring capabilities, the BioSentry® is considered to be a disruptive technology…Water analysis processes that once took days can now be completed within a matter of seconds.”

BioSentry® satisfies the need for real-time microbial detection in any food processing that requires water. Constant monitoring and immediate detection of biological contaminants helps prevent:

Product loss
Manufacturing recalls
Negative publicity
Consumer illnesses and deaths

“BioSentry’s laser and bio-optical library detects rod-shaped signatures (like Salmonella and E. coli), spore-shaped signatures (like anthrax), and protozoa-shaped signatures (like Cryptosporidium and Giardia). All other particles passing through the laser get classified as ‘unknown’ but are still reported and can also signal a contamination alert,” said JMAR’s Chief Executive Officer, C. Neil Beer, Ph.D.

BioSentry® can be used as both a real-time contamination alarm and as a biological monitoring device to complement and enhance the water quality safeguards used by the food processing industry today. Frost & Sullivan chose BioSentry® as the leading innovative approach to water quality monitoring in their 2008 Biological Detection Product of the Year Award.
