You do not create demand by artificially increasing prices of homes - right now the air is being let out - demand will return when the value balance returns. To accelerate that the government can help retire the bad debt/assets. They can also put in place regulations that require sensible lending practices to return. Zero down - wtf is that?

I agree with the regulation. But retiring the bad debt does nothing if the economy is in a downward spiral... there will just be more bad debt. Asset prices have to rise, and that takes general economic activity.

Now you can make the argument to do nothing and let things bottom on their own, and I'm sensitive to that argument. The kicker on that is how bad you think things could get.... and the more I listen to the economists, and look around at what's happening, the more alarmed I become. You can never know for sure but I think we're in a catastrophic cycle.

If so, then no medicine, no matter the side effects, is worse than the disease.
