Corporations are creations of the government, they are required to act in responsible ways. They cannot do whatever they like although you wouldn't know it to watch them. The capitalist system relies on laws and regulation and enforcement in order to survive. We are now seeing the results of as close to 'free market' capitalism as we can manage...the results suck. Interconnected boards of directors have raised compensation sky high while disconnecting it from actual performance...the same problem as the banking crisis. The system doesn't work very well, I heard a count of 100 financial crises in the world in the last 30 years. We all end up paying for these things so we all have a stake and a say.
