Please recall Clinton was elected the first time only because Perot was running--without that we would have all Republican Presidents since Carter (presumably). (I concede California is not a center right state--nor NY either.)

Also, one can make a strong argument that for the center it was not so much a vote for Obama as against the previous Administration.

IMHO, it's a very fragile political coalition Obama has with the swing voters--who want solutions and not left ideology and welfare spending.
