Well, there certainly were many who didn't like the fact that the US and the USSR partitioned Korea with no input from Koreans. Who can blame them? Trading one set of rulers for another isn't a confidence inspiring choice. And the actions of the South Korean government in "purging" when they got control over an area didn't help the cause much.

Now, I will grant you that South Korea is much better off than they would have been. Although, as late as the 1970s, North Korea had a better standard of living, once SK got in their feet, things improved rapidly.

"More likely than not" is not exactly a ringing endorsement.
