<<<Under the $819 billion stimulus package passed by the House last week, public schools and colleges would get $140 billion. Of that amount, $79 billion would go to a so-called state stabilization fund intended to avoid teacher layoffs at public colleges and schools. But Mr. Duncan said his department will have discretionary control over how $15 billion from the fund is spent.>>>

1. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said he would use $15 billion from the pending federal economic-stimulus package to encourage states to raise academic standards, bolster teacher training and undertake more-sophisticated testing and data gathering,

2. $79 billion would go to a so-called state stabilization fund intended to avoid teacher layoffs at public colleges and schools.

I don't see anything wrong with spending money on education reform to make the product (students) of our school system to become more competitive against global competition. Money spent on education reform may not stimulate the economy immediately but the long term impact may be profound.

There is nothing wrong with what I can see about Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan thinking on this matter.

Obama has consistently said that he was after recovery and reinvestment.
