There is a very strong interaction between processing steps like etch, strip & pre clean and deposition.
In case of Novellus a pre clean / strip processing step might be extremely important in order to achieve a superior film deposition.
It's called process integration and Applied Materials recognized this a long time ago in pushing "complete solutions" IOW every processing step would try to optimize prior and subsequent processing steps to obtain optimum results.
"The total solution approach" was correct but it works in smaller segments - IOW there is NO total solution but several "smaller" total solutions - integrate processing steps to boost the core business like deposition in case of NVLS.
Even NVLS is loosing in CMP they probably get a lot of data back on how to improve their deposition processing steps but that's probably beyond Arcuri's et al horizon
