Vi,

Hopefully this is very short term, relative to our history, it could certainly be at least a few years, but that overall is still short term. While early on I expressed the opinion that the damage Bush was doing would be felt for decades, perhaps centuries, I really don't think we could have chosen anyone better than Obama to start to cure the myriad of problems he created.

There is little doubt in my mind that man is the first animal to inhabit the earth that has the ability to sustain itself against most anything nature can throw at us. The question is can we get our act together in time to do it.

Recent close calls with meteor impacts that could have been life changing are one example of threats that we should be working on. Global warming is certainly another problem, a reversal of our magnetic poles, which could actually have already started, could certainly be another threat.

I guess what I'm saying is with the size of the universe, we're rather minor, but we could have an influence in keeping our species around. No other species could plan for disasters which could be coming, but from what I gather, if nearly everything is ever killed off, there will be cockroaches.
