For higher ed, something has to break through to the course level to cause widespread increases in efficiencies and a reduction in costs. A blank check will never do it. A competitive cycle will do it. Exactly how we get there however I've no idea, but a recession as we are having now is forcing universities to figure this problem out finally because state funding is being cut. Private universities will have to follow this path as private donor contributions are bound to fall.<<

Here is how I see the education situation. Many people do not understand they live in a society and so society has to do things that are in the best interest of that society.

And a strong educational system is job 1.

In California they built tons of colleges from 2 year junior colleges, state colleges to top notch universities.

Tuition ues to be very cheap. The best thing about public colleges is that the teachers are pretty much random regarding ideas. This is best for students in that it ensures they get a comprehensive introduction to ALL of the ideas of the world.

Knowledge/education is best served free of dogma, and all of the dogma-lol. Then let the student decide what they beleive.

Let the states build as many schools as needed and let them be filled with a cross section of random teachers with all sorts of different ideaology.

Keep tuitions low and provide work study programs.

I was able to work my way all the way through graduate school flipping hamburgers, a few low interest loans and a work study program.

If we strengthen the pubic education across the nation, our nation will greatly benefit and so will the individual.
