Meanness doesn't enter into it for me.

It doesn't for me, either. But it seems to me a poor strategy long term to foster the perception of meanness.

But it's probably more a representative of what they fear from the stimulus package in general than that they think food stamps per se are bad.

Can't argue with that. But it doesn't excuse anything.
