After reading Kate's post, Steve, I decided we are debating two different policy issues. And this particular case is not a good one for either.

1. Whether the state presently takes care of children and their families born under these circumstances. It's my impression medicaid does that and I have no problem with the general policy. Trying to stay away from this particular case.

2. Whether the state pays for the fertility treatments. I don't think it's paid for under medicaid but I don't know for certain. And obviously don't know whether California does so or not. Nor whether medicaid or the state or some combination paid for this woman's fertility treatments. I have more of a problem with this.

But continue to think this case is not a good one to discuss the general policy issue.
