John;

But continue to think this case is not a good one to discuss the general policy issue.

I would be happy to pick another case where the mother is allowed to undergo the procedure with tax payer funds .......but those don't get to the headlines so we can discuss them. For instance, each of this mothers children were conceived by the same procedure, so pick whichever one of those births you want to use. It's not the case - it's that any single mother be entitled to this type of procedure. If you want to pay for it with your taxes - great.

Whether the state presently takes care of children and their families born under these circumstances

The two issues are one. You won't have to pay for the children if the procedure is not allowed for single mothers who can't pay.

Whether the state pays for the fertility treatments. I don't think it's paid for under medicaid

So how was an unemployed single woman going to school able to get this procedure? If she did it as an experiment for the dr - that makes it worse yet. Bioethics is perhaps the issue that should be discussed, but I think you are naive to think this single unemployed woman going to school with six kids three of them being disabled was able to come up with the cash for the operation. If she was she should NOT be entitled to Food Stamps
