Expecting to be PM: Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu (Reuters: Baz Ratner )

Rival would-be prime ministers Tzipi Livni and Benjamin Netanyahu are racing to form working coalition governments in the wake of Israel's general election.

While Likud Party leader Mr Netanyahu said he expected to be the country's next Prime Minister "with God's help", his centre-left rival Ms Livni urged him to join her national unity government.

Exit polls point to a win by Ms Livni's ruling Kadima party, with the right wing Likud a close second.

Mr Netanyahu says he has already spoken to other party leaders, and says he can bring together a good, stable government for Israel.

The leader of Israel's far right party, Avigdor Lieberman, says he is open to working with either of the two frontrunners in the country's elections.

It is up to Israel's President Shimon Peres to decide to who should be given the chance first; but the process is likely to take weeks.
