That's certainly possible.

(All things are possible.)

But I HIGHLY DOUBT that lying to the American public by misstating the true magnitude of the Global economic contraction --- arguably the worst synchronized global economic catastrophe within living memories of most of the people extant on the planet --- would be much of a way to become 'popular'.

Generally, no one prefers to hear bad news... but eventually truth always outs. And Americans, throughout history, have long evidenced a preference for the plain and simple TRUTH.

So, I expect that those who tell the truth will ultimately stand to benefit from their honesty *more* then they will be harmed....
