How old is your kid Derek? Sounds like a pretty savvy "netizen".

He'll be 17 in 7 week's. When he was 14 he was running a BBS and it got to the point that he was sluffing school to run his system! I shut the system down, worked for awhile, but then he just kept sluffing. To make a long story short (be happy to talk more via emial) he taught himself all these great thing but had much wiped out the ninth grade amd a lot of the tenth! I had a real battle but just this past summer he decided it was time to get serious about school and enrolled in a new high school and he is working really hard on the studies and catching up slowly. He want's a degree in computer science and with renewed interest in school, I think he's on the right track!

14 was a very tough age for my kid! He was influenced my RAP and all that but my parents didn't care much for Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath! But RAP sucks! Amazing though, I catch him listening to Journey or the Beatles etc. all the time now! With your stepson being a math whiz he's already one step ahead! I've always supported my kid by getting him whatever "tools" he needed to pursue an interest and we have a great relationship, well 14-16 had it's moments but he's really maturing now. I'm happy that computers are his favorite thing, well pursuing girls is high on the list now!

I'm trying to inspire my stepson with examples of "kids" that are doing neat stuff with computers.

Thats all you can do. If he has in interest he'll pursue it and your there to help! When I brought home our first PC my kid knew nothing about them at all. Within one year he was running the BBS and completely tied up our computer! So we bought the parts and he built up our first Pentium. He just has a love for all this stuff and I'm happy and feel fortunate that he's into technology things. How about getting him going on his own web page? Of course he'd need to come up with an idea but that can be fun! If you need any kind of help at all send me an email.

Derek
