Perhaps our goal as a nation should be to provide insurance without the profit motive

Why should that be our end goal? It might be argued a step to get where we want to go (I'm skeptical, but I'm willing to consider the argument), but I don't see "without the profit motive" as a goal, as something that you want for its own sake. (Also in most cases I don't see it as a good way to get to other goals)

What would you suggest - should I move to Bemedji, Minnesota and trade from there in the hope that insurance might be cheaper there?

To the extent that its an issue with state law and regulation, you wouldn't have to move to Bemedji, you could move to Minneapolis-St. Paul a metro area about 260 times bigger.

But if the market was opened up to allow full competition between companies from different states (a much smaller step then socializing health insurance), than you wouldn't have to move at all, but would consider bids from companies charted by any of the 50 states.
