Arson threat

Police have released a photo of a man they want to speak with in relation to a suspicious fire in Ivanhoe, in Melbourne's northeastern fringes, yesterday. Police said he was aged in his 20s, has a dark complexion and was seen wearing black clothes and yellow sunglasses.

Police are also hunting an arsonist whose actions threatened the Mornington Peninsula town of Baxter last night, as the Nine Network aired its bushfire relief telethon. The fire was deliberately lit and "had the potential of becoming a major fire in the area, which is tinder dry'', a police spokesman said.

Sergeant Michael Lamb of Hastings police said he was shocked by the arson as the nations digs deep for bushfire victims. "There was a telethon for victims of bushfires and somebody goes out and does this.'' he said.

Victoria Police Commissioner Christine Nixon has said a suspect is being spoken to. "Last night, we did, in fact, have two fires that were lit and in one case we have a suspect that we're talking to,'' she said. "The other one we're very clear about who the person is.''

Police have also arrested two people for allegedly stealing money donated to the victims. A 36-year-old man allegedly broke into a Ferny Creek school to steal cash and cheques, while a 16-year-old was held over thefts in Thomastown.

Deputy commissioner Simon Overland has said police are looking for a "serial arsonist" operating in Gippsland, in the southeast of the state, in relation to the fires there. Twenty-one people were killed in that area.
