Slife, what about the other 20% of mom's savings not in cash?

You didn't tell us but that info probably indicates where their heads are at. If in banks, its doom. What are the chances they will listen to the good advice you got here? They may only be comfortable in mutual funds or bonds at best. In that case probably you can only persuade them to diversify a bit - at least they can then see that some sectors are better than others. Sometimes i wonder if the bunch here are a tad alarmist, not directionally, but speedwise. If things unfold more slowly than we worry about, then time will take care of things for her (if not the rest of us). That's Obama's job.

If your mom is past 75 or 80, then maybe you'll have to accept that her fate lies in cash. Misery (and old folks)loves company and there will be plenty of company for your mom. Politicians will be wary of hurting old folk too badly or will bail them out- sort of. If your mom is much younger, you have a bigger job to do - very tough if they wont listen. Good luck.
