JSB,

I think you should take LindyBill's suggestion (of getting a proper cholesterol check) seriously.

Since, as you said, you have had MI and have always had low cholesterol, maybe you have the LDL of predominantly the bad kind - small particle LDL.

Additionally, there is a question of inflammation. CRP test (C-Reactive Protein) test is a reasonably good proxy for measuring inflammation, which would be another test someone who has had MI may want to consider.

OTOH, there is this argument: While statins have a very limited proven usefulness (despite wholesale use), the one group - maybe the only group of people who are shown to derive benefit from statins are males who have had cardiac event.

But that's a general statement, it does not take into account 10s of variables that make an individual patient. So your doctor may just be playing defensive medicine. First of all, covering his own ass, hoping that maybe you will beneifit as well.

If the bad things LB (and I) are suggesting to test - small particle LDL and high CRP are in fact in place, there are other ways to address them, and it may be possible to phase out the statin use...
