The US has turned into a militarized camp full of thugs, fanatics, extremists and assorted lunatics. The pervasiveness of right wing thug thinking has left a couple of generations worried about SWAT teams crashing through their front door if they should utter a word about fair wages or 70% marginal tax rates. The left has been beaten up so badly that the whole country is suffering for its learned helplessness. Americans have turned into a quaking mass of jello for the most part. Maybe this is a big enough lesson that the idea of a really progressive country will claw its way out of the mess we are in. If we do not get our act together, we are going to be led around by the nose by dictatorships in China and Russia and Washington. :(
