I hear you; there's a lot of truth in what you say.

Despite the fact that we disagree in some areas, we agree in others.

"Trade is fine but you need to get your own house in order first. We have cannibalized our industrial base. You can't have a healthy economy until you are productive."

Absolutely!

IMO, the danger is that we'll go into a wild swing the other way. Now, more than ever, leaders (and ordinary people) need to think carefully about what they do.

If the US goes into a total "Buy American" mode, what should we expect other nations to do? Why should they buy from the US, if the US won't buy from them?

America needs to regain its export markets... the only way to do that (without getting into trade wars) is to compete. The US will have to win back its markets on quality, price, and comparative, competitive superiority - superiority.

Restrictive trade practices will invite retaliation; such practices are a weapon that will blow up in America's face and defeat its efforts to rebuild.

The US has always preached the benefits of competition to others. Can it live by its own rules?
