Lincoln is honored by many of us as the greatest president, because finally emancipation rests on his name.

But there were other possible scenarios that didn't get a chance. Much of the world was resolving the enslavement issue at the same time we were. The British passed a law and compensated slave owners for the economic loss, with little impact on their agricultural economy, and nothing like the civil strife we had.

Washington was the largest slave owner in Virginia and simply granted freedom to all the slaves on his plantation.

The wealthiest agricultural economy in the world was destroyed by the civil war and would not recover in the aftermath. Every man woman and child in the country suffered over the death and destruction in a very personal way. The soil of the south was tainted with the blood resulting from Indian removal and ethnic cleansing even prior to the plantation economy, virtually forgotten in lieu of the civil war tragedy.

Could it have been worked out in another way, a less brutal and destructive way? We'll never know.
