I should perhaps say claims rather than claim.

The claim that the current situation in the US today is not nearly as bad as the depression, nor is it the worst since the depression. Also the claim - "we probably are not in the worst world wide downturn since the great depression." That's more complex so I only say "probably", and the exact meaning of saying a statement that itself expresses some doubt, is almost certainly correct is a bit ambiguous. So rephrasing that last bit I'd say that the world has seen worse economic situations since the end of the great depression. I'm more focused on the US, but since you did mention the world in your earlier statement I responded to that idea as well.
