It's a general problem with societal priorities, but ultimately, I believe society chose to focus on careers and materialism over raising families. That in turn helped inflate the price of real estate, which then makes dual-income families a requirement, etc.

To maintain the lifestyle of the previous generation, it requires two people working as opposed to one.
