If neither vessel knew they'd had a collision, how did they figure it out?

Both knew they had a collision but didn't know with what. Both surfaced cutting their patrol short and reported a collision with an underwater object and they were headed in. Spooks in each Navy put 2 and 2 together and said, hmmm, both hit underwater objects in the same chunk of ocean, I'll bet they hit each other.
