we shouldn't be sending more troops without the other countries getting their act together and giving more support and fighting troops. We are not really contributing to the fight with a thousand troops here and there. it is more exposure imo to see them come home in a body bag vs fighting a war to win.

I have always believed that given sufficient time we can accomplish reasonable military goals in Afghanistan.

The problem is not our military capabilities. The problem lies in our waffling politicians who cannot or will not set attainable goals.

The only firm goal we have had there is to nail OBL. If that happened early, we might already be out.

I do not worry about getting over committed there. We do not have the logistical capability to support an Iraq sized force in Afghanistan.

I agree with sending more support troops. They are needed now to support what is already there. I do not agree with sending more USMC amphibious assault troops.

Do send more SF. They will duplicate themselves over and over by recruiting, training, equipping, and arming local tribesmen to provide their own local security.
Regional forces (and politics) will grow from alliances created among these local forces for mutual support.

Successful national politicians will come from the regional efforts. Cream always rises.

We started at the top and are trying to work it back down and we are failing at it. Our focus needs to be on teaching Afghanis how to fight the Taliban. We taught Afghanis how to fight the Russians and they prevailed. The Afghanis need a little different kind of instruction this time.
