dbuki, thanks. It is pretty clear, as you say, that naked DNA is out of this picture. Here is some detail on the two patents dealing with cationic accessories:

Vical's
patent.womplex.ibm.com

ABSTRACT:ÿÿ Disclosed are cationic lipids capable of facilitating transport of biologically active agents into cells, including the transfection of cells by therapeutic polynucleotides, the delivery of antiviral drugs, and the introduction of immunogenic peptides. The cationic lipids, comprising an ammonium group, have the general structure [Figure] Also disclosed are adducts of these
compounds comprising additional cationic sites that enhance the transfective or transport activity. Structure-activity correlations provide for the selection of preferred compounds to be synthesized for this purpose. Compositions disclosed for use of these cationic lipid include formulations for in vitro transfection and pharmaceutical formulations for parenteral and topical administration of therapeutic agents.

GMED's
patent.womplex.ibm.com

ABSTRACT:ÿÿ A method of expressing a foreign gene in cells of a mammalian organ in vivo includes the step of injecting genetic material capable of inducing desired gene products into a mammal. The genetic material is complexed to cationic liposome carriers. The genetic material is lipofected into cells of the mammalian organ. Gene expression and cellular function of the genetic material are activated to produce the desired foreign products in the cells of the organ.
