First, it is less prevalent than you suggest. I grew up in the Deep South and I can probably count the references of this nature on one hand in any meaningful context. And frankly, until they destroyed Howard Cosell over it -- and I doubt seriously he deserved it.

Secondly, the context of the cartoon was clearly non-racist. The biggest non-political story on the news this week was of the police having to shoot dead a monkey which mauled a woman.

How you can attach racist connotation to it is beyond me. Just one more product of an extremely convoluted liberal mind.
