Do you know why? It was the casinos and prostitution. Same thing in Galveston during that time. However, the rise of jets to more desirable destinations spelled the end of the casinos for Galveston. Likely the same would have happened to Cuba.

Cuba didn't have any industry to speak of, and their exports were mainly sugar. Neither of which could have supported a Cuba much better off than it is now.
