John,
which of these companies has the sales organization to turn SGI's server technology into cash? who could unload metric tons of IO and processor power on those who most need it? who could finance the next round? and who could sell an NT workstation family of products that are differentiated by their graphics and IO capabilities? IBM has the channels to use everything that SGI has. and they seem to do multi-tier multi-OS selling just fine. on the other hand a technology company with no broad sales engine, would be suicide or lamer.
