yeah but that shift occurred years ago. That is line level manufacturing. What happened in 2001 was that the internet enabled offshoring of the "knowledge worker" class, these are the engineers that design the lines, not simply build them.

The problem with offshoring engineering is that you are seeding the brain of a worker in a different country with all this domain knowledge about your business. Its a bad plan. The GDP numbers are askew regarding this trend also. In the late 90s we had 4% GDP and creating 300K jobs/mo. In this decade we had some GDP reads as high as 9% and 8% (back in the early decade after some stimulus) and what that was measuring was that we were selling a lot- but since the workers were in India the real GDP was going to India not here. Thats why we can't create jobs, we really are creating a lot of jobs - in India. I think they have figured out the GDP anomaly and fixed it lately. The productivity numbers don't work either, they act like one manager at Dell is PRODUCING what all those engineers are building in India, as if its all this one guy's productivity which is false.

Anyway net net, offshoring engineers, lawyers and accountants hit in 2002 and it probably overshot and now some of that, some, is reeling back in. Too late for Dell they lost their company over this though.
