I think Bezos was a software analyst at DE Shaw in the 90's before creating Amazon. He also got a electrical engineering degree from Princeton, so the brain is there. Still, he is no different from the thousands of engineers, software grads and Stanford MBAs out in your part of the woods, Liz. I remember a few years back, the BBC was claiming that Bezos had clear signs of autism. That may very well be and could explain the utter care Bezos take with managing his empire. I do not believe anyone thought after the dot.com bust in 2002 that Amazon would be as strong as it is now in 2009. #18 us ranked site and #28 globally. Of sites that sells goods, only Ebay ranks higher.
