That's good to know what they recommend, but I'm worried about putting oil on the nut.

Plastics are notoriously bad at oil resistance and there is the problem (in my house, anyway) of dust and lint attraction. I'm thinking powdered graphite might be better for my guitar's plastic (probably nylon) nut from a materials compatibility POV. For metal parts or bone - oil is probably okay, though a dry lube would definitely attract less dirt - my guitar is out all the time so it does get dirty. I give it a good cleaning every once in while, especially when I change strings. I suppose they might be using better materials on the real Fender but oil always scares me a little.

As hobbyist, I use waxes and pencil lead a lot. Plastics are usually not embrittled by waxes, and certainly not by graphite.
