Watchmen One of my favorite literary works is a graphic novel called "Watchmen". It was written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. It is a many layered book and it is very deep.
Alan Moore wrote the graphic novels that the movies "V for Vendetta", "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and "Constantine" were based on. If you saw "V for Vendetta" you probably know that he has a strong distrust of governments.
Hollywood did something right. The book was published in 1986 and thankfully, Hollywood waited until the technology was ready for this movie.
The movie is going to be released on 3/6/09, but my wife and I got into a press screening. They even gave us free drinks and popcorn.
I once had a movie rating system here on SI, but I've kinda forgotten it.
Anyway, this movie ROCKED!
Anybody who watches "Grey's Anatomy" and likes Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will see him in a completely different light as his semi-superhero with serious character defects "The Comedian".
Did you see the movie 27 Dresses? Remember Katherine Heigl's vacuous sister "Tess"? She plays Laurie Jupiter aka Silk Specter II. And OMG, she is freakin hot and seriously tough. She is also in the hottest R rated sex scene I have ever seen.
Billy Crudup, the rock star in "Almost Famous" plays Jon Osterman aka Dr Manhattan. He is the only superhero with true superhero powers. He'll remind you of one of the guys from the Blue Men Group. Even as a demi-godlike superhero, he has his self doubts.
Do you remember the surly delinquent baseball player in the Bad News Bears? His name is Jackie Earle Haley. Walter Kovacs aka Rorschach is the role that Haley was born to play. All you right wing nutballs will love this character. He is hands down my favorite character of the movie.
I am not going to go into the whole plot of the movie, but this movie does receive my highest rating of "Will facilitate spiritual enlightenment in the dying days of our culture".
Not only does it have a great message and will pose questions that will cause much pondering, it has great graphic violence and the hottest R rated sex scene I have ever seen.
If you are squeamish about graphic violence...maybe not the best movie for you. |
