Once again - I am a big proponent of nuclear power - but people have to be realistic about the high, high hurdles that these plans face. They simply are not realistic.

Not sure when that article was written, but they completely ignore the FPL project in Florida. And their cost numbers are low; when they talked in Florida about building those plants they left off the cost of transmission lines, including the materials, construction and acquisition of property. It almost doubled the cost when the 'final estimates' came in. You can almost bet that there will be cost over-runs even on the FL $17Billion final estimate.

Some people are fighting the 25% increase in Florida electric rates to pay up front for this thing (especially with the FL economy totally tanked and population growth slowed to a trickle). How many other states would find that consumer pass on politically tenable?

He's right that the nuke plant business model seems to be broken. But from Florida's experience not impossible.
