Any threatened cuts, as economist Dean Baker recently warned, would only discourage spending and reduce confidence

As would tax increases.

Cutting social security today, isn't really an issue on anyone's radar.

The problem is not what we spend today (although it is a lot and something of a problem), but what Social Security will cost in the future.

If we don't reign in the future increases in the program somehow than it will be a serious problem.
